Soundcheck: Marco Polo & Ruste Juxx

Marco Polo & Rustee Juxx – Rearview

Off of Marco Polo & Ruste Juxx’s new LP, The eXXecution. Haven’t been the biggest fan of either one of these cats. Neither Marco Polo’s Port Authority nor last year’s Double Barrel with Torae really did much for me. White kid from Canada channels Premiere & Pete Rock. This might have been a revolutionary concept back in the 90′s (Not really though. Rick Rubin, Sam Sever & Paul C were the OG white Hip-Hop beatmakers) but these days, hearing producers like The Alchemist, Jake One, Statik Selektah & Nicolay bring heat consistently is nothing new. Ruste Juxx has been down with Duck Down since Heltah Skeltah’s Magnum Force and has appeared on numerous Boot Camp projects over the years. He finally released his debut album, Indestructible in ’08, but nothing he’s done ever really distinguished him from the other C-List BCC’ers. Not for me anyway.

But this shit right here?

En Fuego.

Straight BK thuggery served up with just the right amount of ignorance…

I been reppin’ since Kool G Rap & Kane and them
Doug E. Fresh, Dana Dane & them, entertainin’ them
Chalk line framing them, never gave a fuck about
Niggas talkin’ shit, I just punch you in your fuckin’ mouth

Sean Price would be proud.

Polo’s backdrop amounts to a death march for wack MC’s. Striking piano chords and drums that sound like a firing range give Ruste the perfect platform to pop his shit. The entire project is vintage East Coast boom-bap-get-ya-shit-cracked rap and both Marco & Ruste have definitely moved up a couple of notches on my list of MC’s/Producers to keep on the radar.

Marco Polo & Ruste Juxx’s  The eXXecution is in stores now.

Support the real.

On the song Fuckin’ Wit a Gangsta, Sean P is also on it and mentions hes Ruste Juxx’s ghost writer. I’m usually not a fan of ghost writing, but thats only when people try to front about that shit, I’m glad they clarified that P does alot fo his writing, no respect loss, these guys go hard.
..I’ve been away from the internets for some time, feels good to be back..

yo Amp i can’t believe you slept on ruste juxx, that dude is a phenomenal emcee, if you never heard ‘mastered the style’ off that duck down mixtape from way back, i mean i’m not sayin you should smack yourself, but i’m not not saying it either, and marco polo is quite the beatsmith, so you get a late pass on both, but lets not be sleepy floyds on these guys next time around, good to see you’re shouting these guys out now after giving their stuff a listen, duck down goes in like no other label it seems, and ruste has been an up-and-comer for awhile now, this album i will cop on vinyl

I tried to get into Ruste’s stuff (nh) but for the most part, I haven’t been impressed until The eXXecution. Same with Marco Polo. But I’ve been a loyal Duck Down fan since Enter The Stage so I was gonna give this one a listen on GP. With the lack of potent NY Hip-Hop, this album is proof that East Coast Hip-Hop is still potent when done right. I’m probably gonna revisit both Indestructible and Port Authority just off the strength of this joint.

thats definitely the truth about NY hip hop, I’ve read some of your drops before and i think you’re on the west coast like me, and it seems like there is a lot lacking in both the ny and cali hip hop scenes, and that all the indie cats from everywhere else are the ones really shining as of late, but i think the case is usually that certain emcees get more play than the others that deserve it in NY and cali respectively, so there are some real sleepers that need recognition, another reason to turn off the bs on the radio and tune into the internets since the internets is the new radio

indestructible was a bit so-so since it was a rehash of stuff that ruste had been featured on, collabos and so forth, and if you need any proof of marco’s skill on beats, i would actually check out the newport authority mixtape which i actually liked better than the official port authority album

CJ– yah, on Safari at least daily-math is raising some kind of malware flag.

re: Rustee, I could live without him ever saying “your mama is a slut” again, even as an ironic ‘joke’ but when he breaks the old boring battle rap cliches, he’s pretty good.

Even Duck Down fans were so weirded out by “Indestructible” they didn’t talk about it like… huh? But there is some strong work there (the more personal numbers), as well as some that was … unfortunate.

Don’t sleep on General Steele’s new one, if ya’ll haven’t’ gone in there yet. A couple questionable production choices but very good overall.
