Show Bill by Theotis Jones

It’s the Box That Rocks! Ralph McDaniels, founder of the seminal Video Music Box talks thirty years of history. Highlights include how Big Daddy Kane shot someone causing him to miss “The Symphony” video shoot, how we wasn’t fucking with Mr. Magic at first, gunplay at NaS’s “It Ain’t Hard To Tell” video shoot, running with a young and grimy Russell Simmons, allowing a young Jay-Z to play hype man for the Notorious B.I.G. and how really good he is in these streets. This is #RapHistoryMonth b. #Newmanati.

Video: The @ElliottWilson Interview, Part 2

Hate Elliot Wilson, aka YN because of his self-branding? Looked up Rapradar.com on Alexa and found that it’s not getting as much as the next site documenting the culture? Guess what fuckybergs? Yellow Nigga could care less, and knows that his “old ass” is making new shit around the clock while you’re still wiping the cold out of your eye. Watch and learn, young folk. Watch and learn … (Part 2 of 3)

Part 1

The Memphis Bleek (@MemphisBleek) Episode

Wanted to interview Bleek for a while. Being protege to the greatest rapper is a gift and a curse, and we get into that. As well as why he started the legendary Jay-Z vs NaS beef, how he discovered Rick Ross, gave Rihanna her first shot, the rise and “fall” of the Roc and whether he knew that  some considered him one of the greatest weed carriers of all time.

The Clark Kent (@DJClarkKent) Episode

This man’s history can’t fit in one episode. Pause. Clark talks about how he started dj’ing at 9 years old as he witnessed first hand the birth of Hip Hop, why he felt Jay-Z was a better mc than B.I.G., why he didn’t sign NaS and more. We didn’t even get to the sneakers.

The Bridge Dilemna: Jay-Z, The Devil, & Mom’s Disapointment

Cities_Bridge_004597_

Children are often asked some complex questions.

As a youth, I tended to do my share of average dumb junk:  kick down doors, knock down fences, botch petty theft from churches, beat on the racist neighbors, and a bunch of other junk that sounds harder when written than it really was.  After I got caught after each situation (smooth I was not) and right before getting justifiably beat, my mom dukes would always find out who did the dumb-dumb with me, and then ask me the following question: “If such-n-such jumped off a bridge, would you? “.  Off top, I was somewhat glad she asked this since I was usually the leader in most of these affairs, thus a better question woulda been  ”When you jump off the bridge, should they?”, but that’s neither/nor.  The real issue was the grip of gray area in this question that she always thought should yield the answer “no”.  But to me, to answer that question properly, first we gotta talk about who’s jumping off the bridge and what’s to gain from it when I dive in after that fool.  I mean is it 2-tooth cracked out Suzy down the street from grandma OR is it Donald Trump’s son with a reward in tow?  OR was it gonna be my IT girl form back in the day, Rachel from Caribbean Rhythms?  Is she wearing one of them bikinis that she never actually got in the water with?  Can she even really swim?  If not, I’m putting money on my mean doggy paddle to come through to save her just to hear her cough out some thank with her Cleo suspect accent followed by me telling her my repayment plan. Next Up!!!??

crystal-ball-2
“Out with the old and in with the new.”

That’s the noogie being scraped across the head of rap music as we closed out one era and move on into the next. You didn’t notice it, did you?

As I type, this once intriguing culture of ours is growing into its mid 30′s. (Yes, Hov is older than rap.). Most athletes at this age have peaked or begin to show signs of waning down. Luckily for sports fans, there is a new crop of young and hungry athletes ready to take charge and carry on tradition. But this is rap and the sport called the rhyme isn’t as progressive as we’d like it be.

The Southern reign is at its tail end. The East Coast has enough relevant catalyst to make a fist (or peace sign) and the West Coast is hanging on to Snoop and the loc with the tattoo on his face like grandma holds on to that plastic on the living room furniture. As mid-life crisis time nears for rap, we as fans have to look at the landscape in front of us and ask:

Who, or what, is next? Continue Reading →

Jay-Z, Library Of A Legend

jay-library-wide

I copped most of this off the internet about a year ago. Someone took the initiative of compiling most of Jay-Z’s discography. I’m a Jay-Z stan fan like that. BP3 had me reminiscing on old Yung Hov though. This collection reminded me why Jay-Z is top contender for GOAT. I linked this from Kevin Nottingham’s site last week. This collection is so good I figured it needed it’s own post. 11 cd’s worth. You Jay haters might want to cop this too, figure out where, how and why you still deny dude his greatness.

Tell Kevin I sent you. And don’t ever say I never gave you nothing.

Standouts: Jay ripping beats with Mos Def and Talib Kweli, plus his cameo with Dead Prez.

9-11 Was Not A Good Day For The Dred

48September 11, 2001 was a good day. Or at least was gonna be one. I was in the middle of re-negotiating Jaheim’s contract with Warner Brothers, and was looking at bringing home a fat stack, even though his manager Pookie was becoming a royal pain in the ass. On top of that, I had the #1 record in the country, “I Wish”, Carl Thomas’ first single, written and produced wholly my my client Mike City, the hottest songwriter producer in the world, at the time. Plus, I had copped Jay-Z’s “The Blueprint” the day before from a local mom and pop shop and was still taking in the enormity that was “Takeover”. Continue Reading →

Jay-Z – ‘The Blueprint 3′ Album Review

jay-z_blueprint3_cover-400x400So the album leaked was sent out to several world renown taste makers today.  I was one of the fortunate individuals to have received a copy for review purposes. I guess the powers that be heard I was a dope blogger who also happened to be a long-time Jay-Z fan. A lotta songs have been flying around on the Internets. Some of them had me worrying whether the BP3 was gonna be straight basura. Being the rap icon that Shawn Carter is, I kinda needed to like this, or just be mad at the world for the fact that an era just came to an end. So I gave it a coupla lissen to’s. How does it fare? Does Jay need to really retire for good this time? Let’s see. Continue Reading →

Jay-Z – Run This Town (feat. Rihanna & Kanye West)

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8bUgwykXbo

Jay finally drops a real video. It’s been a while since he did something different other than standing, walking around looking like he’s in deep thought, contemplating why/ how he and Dame split. What do you think?

Memphis Bleek to Kanye West – “I Want My Spot Back”

MemphisBleek_534_cover

I remember when I first met Memphis Bleek (Malik Thurston Cox). This must have been around 1995, when he recorded “Coming Of Age” with Jay-Z. He was about 16 years old then. Jay’s protege. They recorded that song way before “Reasonable Doubt” dropped. Crazy how they was putting that album together, bits and pieces, and they was real patient with it too. There was a whole lotta excitement surrounding the then young rapper.

Jay-Z vs. Nas: The Ultmate Time Waster

7238173_JayZ-Nas

Years after ‘Takeover’ and ‘Ether’ dropped, resulting in the biggest and best rap battle Hip Hop has ever witnessed, the past feud between Jay-Z and Nas still continues to fuel debate. This past weekend for instance, the homie Marcus Troy instigated the age old “who won” argument via Twitter and as much as I remain a Jay-Z fan, even with all the diminishing returns and what not, I still claim Nas the victor.

I write all this because I just received this interactive Jay-Z/ Nas rap battle simulator link from legendary media assasin Harry Allen. I don’t know much about it other than what they claim:

“Showdown is an interactive game which simulates a line for line hip-hop MC battle. After selecting an artist, the user will be prompted with a choice of three lines to be used when on their next turn.”

If you’re looking for a time waster today and want a “scientific” analysis as to who won the Jay-Z/ Nas battle, peep here.
