As far as Prince, that “extensive”, “deep” book Touré is talking about has to be hype. I checked for it in the bookstore and it’s paper thin. No way it can be that in depth.

I think Toure said (rightfully, in my opinion) that every (black) man is different and therefore should be expected to act in a specific way to validate what one would consider to be a “real black man”

Now back to Toure’s arrogance, he was definitely abusing his lexical (if that was Rap, I’d have used the “lyrical” instead) advantage to destroy Pete. That wasn’t cool because it kind of took some of the camaraderie and brought in some tension.

To me, in a way, Toure was flaunting his higher educaton into Pete’s face (II) which definitely comes off as some privileged behaviour. Maybe that’s what Pete was trying to say all along.

Obviously, he also brought Pete to some statements you shouldn’t make at all, like that “I’m racist against you”-comment, this one wasn’t smart, but I’d really like to see what others like Dallas Penn or Combat Jack would do if someone treated them like that for 2 hours. Anyway, some things weren’t cool.

Besides that, I thought that Touré’s remarks were at times contradicting themselves and also showing some sort of racist tendencies against white people, intended or not.

Regarding the Complex thing, I like it for what it is… I wish there was a way to have the quick hitters (3 minute clips) like it is now and the option to view full episodes (well, until the show goes big time TV). I would like to see the facial expressions when shit gets real!

That said, I’ve tried to understand the points he was trying to make, but I don’t think he has the lexical equipment to make it across. Also, some of the things he’s saying are super offensive. The whole “street smart” fiasco goes back to the “You’re not not a real black because the black people I know are in the streets” etc… It’s a shame he doesn’t understand how racist this is. Not saying he is racist, but he’s definitely saying some racist shit (word to Jay Smooth) i.e. Real Black People=Street Niggaz.

Touré’s behaviour was straight up shameful, dude acted like a five year old at times and it would have been up to Combat Jack to tell Toré to just listen to Pete’s arguments. This was pretty weak.

In terms of Combat Jack content, access is key. Aural transmissions are more effective because they don’t restrict the visual component of our senses. When it’s visual, the camera mimics our eye movement. Poorly edited content becomes a distraction. Video data on the internet, in the past, was a barrier to video quality and longer content.

i find myself thinking like damn, i know that entire scarface interview was ill but he was wasted by going on the complex platform as opposed to the podcast. like that was a lost opportunity for yall in my opinion. Imagine a good 1 hr unedited interview with Face on the podcast. Is the complex connection getting you access to more interesting people to interview? can yall funnel some of those people over to this site so we could get that shit undiluted?

i also wonder how the quality of the interviews, in terms of the intimacy and willingness of interviewees to go places they wouldn’t normally go (II), is affected by the complex studio atmosphere (audience, etc).

i dont know man i’m a fan (i would never listen to a toure interview anywhere else) and i get that complex is good for everyone’s shine but right now, i mean maybe it’ll improve in the near future but right now, the complex joints seems like a step backwards into the fray at the same time that you still have this standout gem of a podcast which has already taken a backseat.

I wasn’t a fan of Pete after the comments he made on the first Toure episode. I thought calling Toure white (not in a joking manner) was mad ignorant on his part. I realize he doesn’t like to be called racist, but what he needs to understand is that there is no one way to be Black. Being university educated or book smart doesn’t make you less Black. Neither does having access to ‘Harvey,’ talking like “BRRRRRRR,” or lacking in ‘street smarts.’

Listening to more episodes after Toure’s first appearance, I realized that Pete really is a good dude, and I really got a sense of where he was coming from after the Therapy episode. I’ve pretty much gone 180 on my opinion of Pete. That said, I think I may know what (part of) his problem is with Toure:

Pete is pressed (thirsty if you will) for love. It’s obvious that he loves and respects his co-hosts, guests, and the overall culture a lot, but there can be a bit of a disconnect because there’s a lot of Blackness involved. Being that he is Italian, there are a lot of things that he did not, and could not experience or appreciate on the same level as Reggie, Dallas, Just…etc. In that respect there’s a little bit of exclusion, and it’s made worse when it becomes a clowning type thing “You don’t understand, you’re not black.” Again, the clowning is part of the show’s environment, but I can see it being frustrated when you’re being pushed to the side (jokingly) by your brothers.

Now where Toure is concerned, here’s someone who’s brought on the show specifically to talk about Blackness, and the white privilege thing comes up. Having to hear this from your peoples must be frustrating, but when you have an outsider talking about the same thing, and on top of that it’s someone that he can’t identify with (suit, tie, pocket square, middle class, university educated), I’m guessing it really upset him. I’m guessing he went at Toure because he appears to be non-threatening, and not of ‘the culture’ (something that Pete also brought up in the second episode).

So basically, I believe Toure was the lightening rod that set-off some of Pete’s insecurities (Love), and awkwardness with the topic of race.

It’s nice to not hear Dallas impose himself on the interview like Ron said. Respect to Combat for having another great guest. Good questions and all.

I’ve listened to a few dozen shows now and I’ve got a suggestion for Combat. I feel like he should limit the vocal affirmatives and also completing the guest’s sentences. Excessive “right”s, “hmmmmm”s and “mmmm”s feel like they break up the sound of the interview. When Combat jumps in to complete the sentence, it cuts off the interviewee’s chance to punctuate their statement. I look forward to the way that an interviewer is going to color what they say.

Salutes to DJ Benhameen on the mix! That first Styles P record you played was crazy.

What a disappointment this was. An A-list guest and fascinating person comes through, yet so much time is wasted on Just Blaze’s need to sort out a decade long grudge. Even when he wasn’t being clowned by Dame, Just seemed really pressed to get across some sort of “hey, look at me now, big brother” messaging. It was really awkward, and worst of all uninteresting.

I always feel that this show is at its worst when Combat loses the reins, and it becomes too barbershop-y. I wish he would have deaded that shit sooner, so that they could have moved on to more interesting topics.
